Both Lisa Flaherty and Sarah Thomson played in the Megafinal of the UK chess challenge in Eastwood High School today. I'm delighted to say that both have qualified for the next stage to be held in Manchester sometime in July.
Both finished with 5 points from 6 rounds.
Lisa was 2nd I believe in her Category being pipped at the post by someone who scored 5.5/6.
Sarah was joint winner in her Category earning herself the title "Suprima" and a smashing trophy. They both are performing really well at the moment, and shall be challenging for our places within a year or two.
Well done to both of you!! |

George, that's great, well done to both the girls. I wonder if the News would be interested in doing an article about their success? _________________ Robert |

Well done!
Just one wee caveat re media coverage. I believe I'm right in saying that when Ali Roy's successes were featured in the local Ayrshire rag, she suffered so much hassle and negative reaction from some of her less socially aware peers that she decided she wanted to quit the game. She seems to have surmounted this reaction, but, alas, we still live in times where chess still suffers certain image problems, and is certainly not a sport in which girls take part.
Much as I second Robert's suggestion about a wee menshy in the News, I'd hate the girls to suffer in the same way. |

Ian, Intersting comment, I certainly wouldn't want the girls to catch any grief about playing chess so I guess they should be consultated before featuring them in the local rag. _________________ Robert |

Something else cropped up with me which ran into 'club time' and is the reason why I (a) informed David on Sunday evening that I'd be unavailable for the Dunfermline match and (b) wisnae at the club. |
