The last round of the SNCL were played today. We managed due to a stroke of luck to maintain our Division Two Status. We played East Kilbride who were promoted into Division One (Congratulations you Guys).
Ian Marks and George Thomson managed Draws.
Ronnie Wallace, Andrew Smith and Sarah Thomson lost.
The result turned out to be irelevent as I believe that Edinburgh are relegated for not showing up. Who knows perhaps they broke down or were stuck on the Kingston Bridge and shall appeal the decision.??
It's good to know that we shall still be playing in Division Two next season.
All that remains is for us to sort out our FIFTH PLAYER. |

I'd like to think we maintained it thanks to the efforts, commitment and good play of the players who represented the club throughout the season.
Re yesterday, methinks you’re hiding the team’s light under a bushel just a whisker. We were heavily outrated on every board (see below) and, no disrespect to Andrew and Sarah (who played way out of her skin, most impressive), we would probably have expected to go down on boards 4 and 5, so 2-1 on the other three is no disgrace. We were never in any danger on 1 and 3 and Ronnie (last game to finish) was holding for most of the session.

Both Stirling and Grangemouth seem to be keen about fielding two joint teams with us. Unfortunately Stirling were relegated yesterday which means the second team would be in Division 4.
There was a change made in the rules at the AGM which means that if you have more than one team they must play in strict grading order over all the teams.
In effect with two teams they would play in the graded order as if it was a team of 10, the rules about playing up to the higher team have been abolished.
Although I've used the word strict above, an amendment that a 50pt grading difference would permit the swapping of board order was passed, however you cannot then swap the board order around again for the afternoon session.
Although I opposed this rule change at the time with hindsight it may make it easier to field two teams with only one person to organise both teams with the other team captain appointed on the day.
I'm less likely to play in the SNCL next year and so will be standing down as captain whatever the decision is with respect to team amalgamation. |

Ronnie, sorry to hear this. In effect (if this season is anything to go by), this would leave a "core" of Mark, George and me for 08-09, so, unless other members are willing to support the club in the SNCL (unlikely, if, once again, this season is anything to go by), it will be a gey scant Cumbernauld representation in the new Central superteam. I think we would also need to know which of the Stirling and Grangemouth lads would be willing to commit and be available on a regular basis. |

My view is that we should advertise on the Chess Scotland Noticeboard for Full-Time commited players to play for Cumbernauld in the SNCL next season rather than merging with another Club.
Or Perhaps do as Andy Howie suggested and approach a couple ( it will need to be two now if Ronnie is dropping out) of East Kilbride players offering them Permanent Places in the Cumbernauld or (NEWTOWNERS) Team. I would not mind being Captain ( I Think) if Ronnie is stepping down.
I certainly enjoy my SNCL day out and would not like to see them end. |

Smacks of desperation! (Well...)
I suggested in an earlier post elsewhere canvassing our own membership to see who would be available to play in the SNCL over a season. What I had in mind was a simple poll along the lines of
1. Would you be willing to play for Cumbernauld in the SNCL in season 08-09? Yes/No
2. If Yes, on which of these dates (insert SNCL dates) would you be available?
This has the advantage of gauging support and also ensuring that players know they have a club commitment on a particular date in advance, thus avoiding the "Gee, I'd love to play, but I think I might possibly feel like doing x-y-z on some unspecified date in three months' time" type response. |

I've tried advertising on the CS noticeboard previously and got precisely zero respondents. We can't always be guarenteed that Mark can play every week.
I spoke to the EK captain who felt perhaps Andy had overestimated the interest from their club that can give a solid commitment to play. I offered the option of a joint team but it's not something they'd be able to consider until their AGM in August.
We need to decide at our AGM what we are going to do and we won't know what the SNCL dates will be by then, in fact we won't even know the venue.
Furthermore, not a lot of people can commit months in advance.
If we bring in people from outside Cumbernauld we can't really expect to charge them and is it right that membership fees (It's £60 per team) are being used with so few Cumbernauld players taking part?
If the merger with Stirling and Grangemouth is accepted then the teams will comprise at least 3 Cumbernauld players, and our fee would drop to £40.
Otherwise I do not see how SNCL participation is feasible and will recommend to the AGM that we withdraw. Those still committed enough to want to play in the SNCL I'm sure would be able to get a game with other teams if they offered their services, certainly Mark and Ian.
Sorry to be so negative, but face facts, that's the way things are. |

At £12.00 per head if each individual decided to pay his own way it's still
better value than a weekend chess congress! |
