There is a huge difference between asking a non club player to play when no club player is available, and asking a non club player to play when club players are ready and willing to play.
Surely it wouldn't come to this?
There's a wee paradox underlying all of this. If we bemoan the fact that we're a "small club" and could do with more members (as we often do!), then we can hardly turn away someone who bona fide wants to join! (Albeit "only" to play in div. 1!? Hey, they might like us and stay Very Happy )

[
If we are relegated from division one it means dropping to a league with 6 boards so not only playing against poorer rated players but less opportunity to play. I just think that if we are in division one the GCL captain should be given free reign to try and get us to remain there.
Is the Glasgow Div Two changing to six boards?
I read on the C/S website that this was a rumour
Do we not have a say as to whether or not they change to six boards?

If the GCL becomes 3 divisions (which is a distinct possibility) the
constitution means division 2 becomes 6 boards.
There's also likely to be a motion at the AGM about reducing it to 6 boards.
I can't believe you've not got the hang of quoting yet. Smile

Hi Guys,

This is my first and last post to *any* discussion board.

Firstly, I wanted to congratulate you all on the hard-earned and
well-deserved promotion. It is a fantastic achievement and I am sure
that everyone's game will benefit from the stronger competition in
Division 1 - my average opponent this season was rated well over 2200.

Secondly, now is the time for celebration and preparation for the battles
to come. Perhaps I can at least help here and remove one source of
speculation by stating that, unless Crowwood pull off a miracle against
Shettleston this Thursday, next season I'll be shouting for you from the
bear pit that is GCL Division 2.

Good luck!

Mark

I agree with this, which is one of the reasons that I placed the original post. I think to get yourself prepared to play in Division One only to have your Place gifted to an incoming player would be a pretty tough blow to take.
I shall say no more about it until the AGM.
Lets just enjoy the fact that we have been Promoted.
I Believe that this is our first Division One adventure since about 1985!
Does anyone know for sure?
David Bonella Probably would, but I dont think he reads this often.

Had a wee rake through my archives. We were up for two seasons, 86-88, so we must have done something right the first one! To my pleasant surprise I found that in 86-87 I scored 4½/9 mainly on board 2 (1 was the dear departed Harry Peffers) v. ave opp. 2143 (what was I on!?), but was down to earth with a thump in 87-88 with a scabby 1/8 v. a much lower 2038. (I believe contemporary newspeak for this sort of thing is “a learning experience”.) I mention this for two reasons: (i) if we stayed up once, we can stay up again & (ii) whatever board you’re on, you might do better than you think! Be positive!

Mark, I was looking forward to sitting opposite you rather than beside you. Go for it Very Happy

George, I doubt if anybody's place would be "gifted" to an incomer. If an incomer is higher rated, then the League rules state that he/she would have to play on the appropriate board anyway. If Kasparov comes out of retirement and flees to Cumbernauld to escape the wrath of Putin, I will gladly yield board 1 to him (assuming Ronnie wants me on board 1 in the first place!!). I believe your problem is with would-be chancers attracted to us by the lure of a game in div.1, but, to be honest, I don't think it's going to happen. Let's stay positive about our success and not get depressed over something that might never happen.

Just popped on to say

Well done guys. Delighted to see you promoted after coming so close the last couple of seasons.

Try and stay up so we can have a game in Division 1 the season after next!

Very interesting result, I wonder if Dalmuir threw the match in order not to be promoted.

This is idle speculation that could be interpreted as disrespectful to both Dalmuir and Glasgow Montrose.
By losing 5.5-2.5 to Dalmuir we too could be accused of throwing promotion, but that would be grossly unfair to Dalmuir who simply played far better on the top six boards than us on the night.
George Thomson wrote:

Not that I am suggesting that they did.

Then why are you even mentioning it?

I mentioned it because I was just thinking outloud. The result certainly looks a bit dodgy (In my opinion).
I am still not suggesting that the match was thrown. But I could easily understand how someone could think that perhaps it was!

Have you seen some of the FA Cup results this season? "Dodgy" / upset / surprise results happen in all sports. I was talking to Clement Sreeves about the match last weekend and from what he told me it was pretty obvious that Dalmuir were going all out for it in the rapidplay finish. There was no question of any chicanery. Can we now please let the matter drop, enjoy our success and start looking forward to next season?
