For those of you who don't already know I've been working behind the scenes to try and
bring the Scottish Chess Championships to Cumbernauld next year as part of the 50th
anniversary events. I've been doing this as an individual rather than acting on
behalf of the club.
At the moment things are looking quite promising however I've now been asked if
the club itself would like to be involved. In essence it's to allow Chess Scotland to
say that they have the support of the local club.
So, opinions please .... |

Hi Ronnie,
Sounds interesting, do you have any idea what sort of commitment this would require from the club? Are we expected to take up admin or stewarding or whatever?
I think it would be great to have the championship locally only worry is being available for a week to support it.

I got the following reply from Alex:-

With regard to club support the main thing would be to be able to say
that the local club were supporting the event with possibly a
representative on the organising committee (if we have one) and to be
present if we have a FORMAL prizegiving or opening ceremony.
Other than that the tasks are to find a good pub to hold the lightning
and quiz in (preferably free). If one of your club is into quizes they
may wish to be question master.

Ronnie,
If that's the level of commitment I don't see why we shouldn't back the hosting of the championships in Cumbernauld.

Given that only Robert's replied and he seems happy with
the level of commitment, I've said that the event has our support.
It can only enhance the profile of chess in our area.

| The last I heard, the new sports complex at St Maurices was being mentioned. |

| I'm now fairly confident that the 2007 championship will be held in Cumbernauld at St Maurice's. |

Ronnie,
I know where St Mo's is, but where's the sports complex? Nearby?
Re the local club supporting the staging of the congress in Cumbernauld, I would hope to play in the championship, circumstances permitting. Local player flies the flag and all that sort of thing It would also give other club members the ideal opportunity to play in a Scottish Congress event, travel and accommodation being no object! |

Think so, Derek or Daniel will know for sure.

Ronnie,
Any publicity is good publicity!
Seriously, where the meeja are concerned, I make Howard Hughes look like David Beckham. It did cross my mind, though, that if a number of us were playing in the congress, it might drum up a wee bit of interest. Depends how it's handled. If it's along the lines of nerdy-no-lifers-play-stupid-kid's-game, then forget it, but if it's anything like the coverage they have in Russia or Holland, for example, then give me (and the rest of us) excess of it. |
