CONGRATULATIONS! To George Thomson (3½/5) and John Pearston (3/5) who shared grading prizes in the Major and Minor tournaments respectively. Well done, guys!
Self blew hot and cold for 1½. Had a safe edge most of the way v. GM Stewart Haslinger (2529) in rd 1, but missed a tremendous chance to put him in real trouble in a R+P ending. Saw it, but played it a move too late, when he was able to exploit the delay and eventually take the point. As Fischer once observed, chess is a matter of timing.

I'm delighted to have shared third place in the Major.
Going into the last round I could still have shared first place if board one had drawn and I had won. Sadly they never and I could only Draw.
Enjoyed playing very much indeed, Grangemouth is an excellent congress to be involved in. |
