|
|
The club will be open on Mondays during the summer, from next Mon., 22 June, onwards. This will allow us to hold an informal-yet-official rating tournament. The rationale is to give new members and less experienced players the chance to gain confidence and get some competitive experience, and also have their games submitted for rating, a step towards the eight games necessary. However, old lags are not excluded. Anyone coming along who would like to play a competitive, rated game will be paired with a like-minded soul. The time control will be as for the Glasgow League, i.e. 30 moves/1 hour + 12 minutes for the rest. Controller will be yours truly.
Although it's informal, I'd like to start the games at 7.15 pm, as per a normal match night. That way we would stop at 9.39 pm at the latest, plenty of time to tidy up and vacate the premises. Could I therefore ask players to be there by 7.10 so I can make pairings?
Finally, although it would be nice to have as many people involved as possible, there is no reason why you can't play the same person again at a later date. The number of games you play is up to you!
See you on Monday |

Three games played tonight:
Dave McColl 0 George Thomson 1
Paul Black 0 John Pearston 1
Andrew Carruth 0 Ian Marks 1
Tough game between Dave and George which went right to the wire. A good time was had by all. Let's see some more faces next week
(A wee reminder: when you're into your last five minutes in the allegro finish, you don't have to keep score.) |

Dave must be kicking himself, he had a win at one point.
He had the opportunity to oppose Paul's Rook on an open file but chose to defend a pawn which allowed Paul's Rooks to gain access to the seventh rank. Which gave him a little edge from then on. |

It was a great game I really enjoyed it. It was swinging back and forth the whole game. I got a nice pin, overlooked winning a piece, went down a pawn then got my rooks on the 7th and we ended up in an endgame that I had to work hard to win. Dave never stopped wriggling. Brilliant =D _________________ -Paul |

Tight game between George and David that could so easily have been a draw.

Greetings, sports fans!
David Flaherty 1 Dave McColl 0
Paul Black 0 Lisa Flaherty 1
John Pearston 0 George Thomson 1 (Tough fight, this one. Sacs, two time scrambles and could have gone either way.)
It's usually round about now that the club is "officially" open again, so let's see lots and lots of you here from now on |

A local derby tonight in which youth triumphed over experience.
David Flaherty 0 Lisa Flaherty 1
Ian Marks 1 Dave McColl 0
Shall we call next week the 'official' last week of the tournament? The following Monday, Sept. 7th, is Keti's simul, and the one after that is the first match of the season (CL, Stirling v. us).
It has been an enjoyable summer's chess. Everyone who has taken part enjoyed the games . There were comments, however, that it would have been nice to see more faces in attendance, even on the odd evening . |

| Lisa and I have both enjoyed the summer chess competition at the club very much. Unfortunately we will not be able to make the last set of games next week as Lisa has been selected by her school to go on a Leadership course and there is a parent information evening next Monday. Lisa will also have to give up her place at the Keti simul as she will be away from 7th September for 4 days on her Leadership course. |

David -
Kudos to Lisa on being selected for the course!
OTOH, confound it that it means she can't make the simul. Would have wanted as many of the distaff side as poss. out for Keti. |
