Very interesting result, I wonder if Dalmuir threw the match in order not to be promoted. Not that I am suggesting that they did.
This shall certainly make our next AGM interesting. When is it???
I'm curious to know what your views are on allowing Players who never gained promotion to suddenly start playing in the first division? |

My view would be that it is up to whoever is the team captain to decide. |

This is idle speculation that could be interpreted as disrespectful to both Dalmuir and Glasgow Montrose.
By losing 5.5-2.5 to Dalmuir we too could be accused of throwing promotion, but that would be grossly unfair to Dalmuir who simply played far better on the top six boards than us on the night.

Then why are you even mentioning it?

Probably should hold the AGM in May, say Mon 12th or 19th. |

Guys, I doubt if any club would seriously throw the chance of promotion. Talk is talk. "Oh, we don't want to go up, we're not good enough" blah blah blah Baloney. We just play our matches and if we get enough points, up we go.
If this is def, enjoy every move of next season. It'll be an ideal opportunity to match yourself against players you might not otherwise get the chance to play. And remember - nobody can make you feel inferior but you.
Roll on 08-09. |

George, trust you to stir things up, I thought you would have learned your lesson from the Chess Scotland notice board
Once again the great questions of chess get asked:
Is it the playing that counts or the winning?
What does membership mean?
and why is it always the onlookers that see the correct move after you have offered a draw!!!!
Such is life _________________ Robert |

Because a player is so involved in the game that he often can't stand back and look at what's going on from the outside. Happens to GMs too! |

Ian, your nobody can make you feel inferior but you is not strictly true.
Because if the Team Captain decides to pick mercenary players who have just tagged along to Cumbernauld in order to play in the Glasgow Div One, then I believe that this would make you feel inferior.
Just to set the record straight I Still consider Mark Ainsworth a Cumbernauld player even though he Jumped ship to Crowwood last season..
My post is aimed at possible New Players from other Clubs who suddenly think that Cumbernauld Chess Club looks attractive because they are graded highly enough to steal someones hard earned Div One Slot. |

One more point about this issue. Last season when East Kilbride earned promotion into Div One they aked Gordon Rattray (2000 plus) to play for them as he had recently moved to East Kilbride.
Gordon refused to play due to the fact that he did not want to deny someone who had earned promotion the opportunity to play in Div One.
This is the principle I am trying to draw to your attention everyone. |

Are you seriously suggesting there's going to be a queue of highly rated players from other clubs phoning up our GCL captain to try and get a game in Division one?
The only way someone from another club would play for us would be if they were invited to by our GCL captain. In our GCL division fixtures you should note that we had to use 15 players to be able to field 8 boards. I've had to several times over the years as various team's captains, ask players with no connection with Cumbernauld to play for us to avoid defaults.
If a team captain is not given carte blanche to ask whomever they want to play I'm not sure I'd want to remain a team captain.
For the record, if I'm GCL team captain next year there is only one player I'd approach from another (non-GCL) club; that'd said there's no guarentee they'd even want to play for us. Also I don't want us to now start playing at name guessing on a message board.
Furthermore, if Mark wanted to start playing for us in the GCL next year rather than Crowwood that would be fine by me were I the GCL captain. |

George, what I meant was that when you sit down against a higher-rated opponent, you shouldn't automatically assume you're inferior. In such a case, the only sense of inferiority comes from within. Play your best and make him demonstrate his superiority by finding good moves! Sure, being bounced by incomers could make you feel inferior (or unwanted), but rather than mope, surely it would be better to use it as motivation to show the captain that it's you who's worthy of a place in the team, not Johnny Newboy. "I'll-show-'em" is a wonderful motivator.

Since this would affect me directly, as the board 1 who helped get us up, I concur. As a club, we should welcome players of whatever strength and experience. Suppose some foreign IM/GM moved to Scotland and settled in Cumbernauld. Not as far-fetched as it might seem. Remember Jan Markos at Poly last autumn? Would we seriously turn away a 2565 GM? As far as Mark goes, prodigal son and all that, surely. Yeah, I want board 1 next season - why shouldn't I? - but I also want the club to do as well as possible, and for that we need the strongest players available. (And anyway, Mark might stay with Crowwood, in which case this is idle speculation.)
Ronnie's right - I don't see a stampede of 2200s heading our way. |

There is a huge difference between asking a non club player to play when no club player is available, and asking a non club player to play when club players are ready and willing to play.
I had to ask Derek Ferris to stand in a couple of times in the Lanarkshire League, but not when there were club members willing to play.
So I'm sure we are all intelligent enough not to confuse the two different sets of circumstances.
I was only curious to know what the general opinion was. |

I've just fixed your earlier attempts at quoting.
If you now edit these past posts you'll see how quoting works. |

Fair point but the amount of times this is likely to happen given
the difficulites of getting 8 players out particularly to away fixtures
I doubt this would really be a problem that arises.
As an example, going by grades alone you'd not have played in any
of our GCL fixtures would I have had our highest graded players available
but you ended up playing all but one I believe.

If we are relegated from division one it means dropping to a league with 6 boards so not only playing against poorer rated players but less opportunity to play. I just think that if we are in division one the GCL captain should be given free reign to try and get us to remain there. |
