Hi guys, just thought I'd let you know (it's official) I'll be playing in this year's Ch. at Troon. I think I'm the first Cumbernauld player to do so since Ian MacKay back in the 80s, so I hope I'll be able to do the club proud.

At the moment the only other confirmed entries are Alan Grant, Steven Brown and Steven Hilton, but I'm assuming that the stronger players will do what they usually do, i.e. wait until nearer the deadline to see who else is playing before entering. As it stands, the four of us could have a three-games-v.-each all-play-all Very Happy

George - good to see you're playing in the U-1500. That means a Cumbernauld player has a chance of winning something! Very Happy

Hi Ian I am beginning to have regrets about entering now as I have just noticed that there are roadworks on the M8. which will unboubtedly cause delays and frustration. However these can be avoided by travelling through East Kilbride then Jackton and Eaglesham joing the Kilmarnock road at Fenwick. It just seems like an awful lot of bother driving down there for one game of chess. I have also noticed that there are only about nine entries in the u1500 at the moment. Your event does not seem to be attracting an awful lot of people either! I think that they have heard that you are playing and are afraid to face you.
Do you have any other suggestions about possible routes to take?
Looking at the number of entries posted it looks as though this event is not capturing the chess players imaginations at all.
It looks like a bit of a flop unfortunatly.

Another question for you Ian.
I noticed that in the u1500 list I am graded at 1443 yet when I do a chess scotland on line grade look up I am graded at 1420 where do you think that the extra 23 points are coming from?

George (and anyone else who might fancy heading for Troon) - I was along the M8 yesterday at about the same time as I'll be passing for Troon and there was no hassle/delay at all. Give yourself an extra 15 mins just in case, but I was most pleasantly surprised. 45 mins, door-to-door.

Re no. of entries - there has been quite a bit of discussion on the CS noticeboard re effect of location on numbers. Numbers at Oban last year were also low and there seems to be a feeling that a more central location is necessary to keep numbers up. (Compare Hamilton two years ago!) As far as the Championship proper is concerned, the absence of big names is due to the absence of sponsorship. Vicious circle - no sponsorship, no big names; no big names, no sponsorship. Hence guys like me can get a shot! I expect to see a few more entries by the weekend. Chessplayers are notoriously tardy in getting their names in.

Re your grading - forget about the numbers. Just go, play, and do your best in each game. Then when you win you'll have a bigger number to forget about next time Laughing
